The management of medical waste is to effectively prevent and control its harm to human health and the environment, eliminate environmental hidden dangers, and ensure environmental safety. Poor management of medical waste can lead to infection and contagion of diseases.

Medical waste refers to waste with direct or indirect infectious, toxic and other hazards produced by medical and health institutions in medical, preventive, health care and other related activities.

Medical waste includes five categories: infectious waste, injury waste, pharmaceutical waste, chemical waste and pathological waste.
1. Infectious waste mainly includes:
(1) Medical waste carrying pathogenic microorganisms with the risk of causing the spread of infectious diseases;
(2) Plastics, rubber, cotton, fibers and other materials contaminated by the patient’s blood, body fluids and infectious excreta;
(3) Pathogen culture media, specimens, strains, and virus preservation solutions discarded by microbiology laboratories;
(4) all kinds of discarded medical books; (5) Domestic garbage generated by isolated infectious disease patients and suspected infectious disease patients.

For infectious waste, the correct way to collect it is:

(1) Collect with yellow medical trash cans with lids and put on special yellow medical garbage bags. When the container is 3/4 full, the garbage bag is sealed and affixed with a special logo.
(2) The pathogen culture medium, specimens, strains, and virus preservation solution in the microbiology laboratory shall be sterilized by steam under pressure at the place of generation, and then collected according to infectious waste.
(3) Waste urine, pleural ascites, cerebrospinal fluid and other specimens can be directly discharged into the sewer with sewage treatment system.
(4) Discarded blood, serum, fecal specimens, and other infectious waste are placed in medical garbage bags and medical trash cans with lids.
( 5 ) The blood transfusion bag should be collected separately in the yellow medical garbage bag 24 h after the blood transfusion.
( 6 ) Waste (including domestic waste) generated by isolated infectious disease patients or suspected infectious disease patients should be sealed in double-layer yellow medical garbage bags.

2. Damaging waste

Traumatic waste refers to discarded medical sharps that can stab or cut the human body, mainly including:
(1) Discarded metal sharps, such as medical needles, suture needles, acupuncture needles, probes, puncture needles and various guidewires, steel nails, surgical saws, etc.;
(2) Discarded glass sharps, such as coverslips, glass slides, glass ampoules, broken glass test tubes; (3) Discarded other material sharps, such as disposable deters, disposable probes, etc.

For injury waste, the correct way to collect it is to place it directly into the yellow medical sharps box.

Note: Select the appropriate size of the sharps box and seal the transfer when it is 3/4 full.
